This is a recipe for Durban-style Dhal, an Indian plant-based curry that is delicious and cozy. Perfect for a chilly winter day!
Ingredients:
- 2 cups Yellow split peas
- One onion
- Garlic and chili (as much as you like)
- 1 tomato optional
- Cinnamon sticks
- Curry leaves
- Mustard seeds
- Cumin
- Salt
- Turmeric
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or canola oil
Method:
- Rinse peas to remove extra starch and boil until soft with 1/2 tsp of turmeric for about 2 hours
- In a separate pot, heat oil and add whole spices – cook until mustard seeds start to pop
- Add onions and garlic and cook until brownish
- Add turmeric, simmer for 1 minute
- Add tomato and water and cook until tomato is soft
- Add soft peas and salt to taste
- Boil and then simmer
