This is a recipe for Durban-style Dhal, an Indian plant-based curry that is delicious and cozy. Perfect for a chilly winter day!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Yellow split peas
  • One onion
  • Garlic and chili (as much as you like)
  • 1 tomato optional
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Curry leaves
  • Mustard seeds
  • Cumin
  • Salt
  • Turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or canola oil

Method:

  1. Rinse peas to remove extra starch and boil until soft with 1/2 tsp of turmeric for about 2 hours
  2. In a separate pot, heat oil and add whole spices – cook until mustard seeds start to pop
  3. Add onions and garlic and cook until brownish
  4. Add turmeric, simmer for 1 minute
  5. Add tomato and water and cook until tomato is soft
  6. Add soft peas and salt to taste
  7. Boil and then simmer
